What Is a Casino?
Casino is an entertainment venue that offers a variety of gambling games. Its customers gamble using money that they either won or lost, and the house always has a mathematical edge over players. However, many casinos offer complimentary items or ‘comps’ to their guests to increase the value of a visit.
Gambling is a part of human culture, and it has been practiced throughout history in almost every society. While the precise origin of gambling is unknown, it is widely accepted that there are some ancient societies that used a form of it to entertain themselves. Today, gambling is legal in most countries and it is an important source of revenue for some economies.
In the United States, there are over 1,000 land-based casinos and more than 40 of them have been legally established. Most of these are located in Nevada, with the rest scattered across the nation in places such as New Jersey, Atlantic City and Chicago. Some of the largest casinos in the world are built as complete complexes, combining gambling with restaurants, shopping, nightclubs and hotel rooms.
The biggest casino in America is Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Oklahoma. It occupies an area of over 630,000 square feet and has a total gaming space of 519,000. It features more than 3,400 slot machines and 800 table games. Winstar also has a huge spa and two golf courses. The second biggest casino is Foxwoods in Connecticut, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. It has 38 restaurants and two golf courses, along with a cavernous gaming hall that can hold 30,000 people.
Other casino resorts are built on islands, such as the Venetian Macau in Asia. This spectacular temple to excess has a million LED lights covering its façade, and is the second largest casino in the world by floor space. The Venetian packs a lot of fun into its 540,000 square feet, with gondola rides, a canal, Michelin-starred restaurants and even a live arena.
There are also a number of mega-resorts that have been built to rival the Las Vegas Strip in size and luxury. Some of these have been built by big names such as Steve Wynn, who owns the Bellagio and Golden Nugget. The most exclusive casinos blend high stakes with high glamour, with guests offered opulent suites and a host of other amenities. The most prestigious casinos are found in places like Monte Carlo, Monaco, and Singapore. While Las Vegas has a reputation for being the ultimate in gaming, it is no longer as exclusive as it once was and is overrun with tourists. If you want to experience Vegas without the crowds, try visiting a less-touristy part of the city such as Red Rock or Green Valley Ranch.
